Harley Shields Harley-Davidson introduced the Switchback in 2012. Since then, there have been a number of changes, most notably the addition of optional ABS brakes, which became standard in 2014. The name “Switchback” is relevant because the saddlebag and windshield were designed specifically for the switchback rider who wanted to benefit from its functionality without having any objections to the style. The Switchback combines the Harley 103-ci (1,690 cc) twin-engine used in the larger touring models with the smaller, lighter Dyna frame used in road cruisers. While windshield and saddlebag are standard in some places, the bike resembles a smaller version of its legendary Road King motorcycle. The Switchback and Engine Revolution models were introduced in a seemingly careful response by Harley-Davidson to analyst concerns about its vulnerability to age and demographic profiles. As previously mentioned, Harley believes the Switchback will appeal to a different demographic than its cruisers and larger touring motorcycles. Comfort is good enough for one person or two people for a full-day trip. The saddlebag is not as wide as a full-face helmet but offers enough space for one person. The raised handlebar and the plank add to the comfort. The windscreen and saddlebag can be removed and reinstalled in less than five minutes. Better mileage than a Honda Civic and much more fun. Valve adjustments are necessary and the carbon fiber drive belt should last for at least 60,000 miles. The oil filter should be changed about every 5,000 miles.
